Core Skills

  1. Dominant defender in tight situations. Ability to knee cap at ruck.
  2. Can cover in both tight and middle channels in the defensive wall (1 – 6 wide of the ruck).
  3. Push pass under pressure both sides to 5m & spin pass 15m.
  4. Low hip height at the ruck / tackle contest. Latching.
  5. Speed to get back to feet at the ruck / tackle contest. Poaching skill.

Scrum Skills

  1. Ability to work with both props and make adjustments to various prop sizes. 
  2. Effectively strike ball under pressure. 
  3. Have ability to hook into various channels. 
  4. Firm understanding of scrum movement tactics given situation on the field. 

Lineout Skills

  1. Ability to throw flat, lobs, short, medium, and long ranges of 5 meters to 20 meters.
  2. Accuracy of throws. Steady and calm under pressure.
  3. Effective mauling skills. 

Priorities

  1. Able to perform correct technique of all core skills under pressure. 
  2. Right shoulder down in scrum & ability to strike “channel 1”.
  3. Consistency in lineout throws. 
  4. Ruck entry. 

Strength & Conditioning

  1. Repeated anaerobic efforts
  2. Close quarters agility
  3. Maximal and isometric strength
  4. 5 to 20m acceleration

Long-Term Athlete Development

  1. U16 & Younger: Ball-movement & defending ball-movement
  2. U18 - U19: Set-Piece & Exits
  3. 20+: Physicality, vertical, ground-game superiority
  4. Potentially a flanker not quick enough at age 16 – 19 yrs old.
