Core Skills

  1. Dominant defender in tight situations. Ability to knee cap at ruck.
  2. Can cover in tight, middle channels, and far channels in the defensive wall (1 – 12 wide of the ruck).
  3. Push pass under pressure both sides to 5m and spin pass 15m.
  4. Ability to hit high number of rucks per match. 
    Makes a physical impact in clear-outs at ruck/ability to move players at the ruck.
  5. Devastating runner with ball in hand, has the ability to utilize various evasive tools to dominate the contact point to get through gainline.

Scrum Skills

  1. Prioritizes pushing strong on scrum before ball is out.
  2. Good foot to ball skills and handling under pressure. 
  3. Good sense of timing and in sync with scrumhalf. 

Lineout Skills

  1. Rapid jumping ability from both static and moving positions. 
  2. Excellent catching skills of ball above head. “Soft hands.”
  3. Strong, stable, and “long” profile in the air. 
  4. Ability to lift at front and back of jumpers. 
  5. Ability to move quickly from various lifting positions.  


  1. Able to perform correct technique of all core skills under pressure. 
  2. Ball carrying ability. 
  3. Aerial expert kickoff & lineout. 
  4. Ruck entry.
  5. Connected with locks at scrum.

Strength & Conditioning

  1. Repeated anaerobic effort ability
  2. Close quarters agility
  3. 10-20m acceleration
  4. Vertical jump height

Long-Term Athlete Development

  1. U16 & Younger: Ball-movement & defending ball-movement
  2. U18 - U19: Set-Piece & Exits
  3. 20+: Physicality, vertical, contact superiority
  4. Potentially a big center or wing who is not quick enough at age 17 – 19.
