Core Skills

  1. Dominant defender in tight situations. Ability to knee cap at ruck.
  2. Push pass under pressure both sides to 5m.
  3. Low hip height at the ruck / tackle contest. Latching.
  4. Speed to get back to feet at the ruck / tackle contest.
  5. Surprisingly agile with ball in hand for size. 

Scrum Skills

  1. Ability to play both sides of the scrum at the younger stages of LTAD. 
  2. Lead the front row into the scrum. 
  3. Strength to maintain imbalanced scrum and large portion of scrum “weight.”
  4. Ability to maintain stable and strong body profile in chaotic environment.
  5. Ability to prevent on a loose-head prop from going “long.”  

Lineout Skills

  1. Ability to lift at front and back of jumpers. 
  2. Ability to move quickly from various lifting positions.
  3. Various roles in attack maul. Drive maul back on D.  

Priorities

  1. Able to perform correct technique of all core skills under pressure. 
  2. Right shoulder focus at scrum.
  3. Ruck entry. 
  4. Connecting with jumper at kickoff & lineout. 

Strength & Conditioning

  1. Maximal and isometric strength
  2. Repeated anaerobic effort ability
  3. 5m acceleration
  4. Close quarters agility

Long-Term Athlete Development

  1. U16 & Younger: Ball-movement & defending ball-movement
  2. U18 - U19: Set-Piece & Exits
  3. 20+: Physicality, vertical, ground-game superiority
  4. Potentially a flanker not quick enough at age 16 – 19 yrs old.
